Vietnam e-Visa Photo Requirements, Explained

A 4x6cm portrait on a white background, uploaded as a JPEG — and it is not the same image as your passport scan.

Quick Check: Do's & Don'ts

No Glasses or Hats

The e-visa portal rules out both explicitly.

No Filters

Beauty filters and retouching get applications rejected.

Use the 4x6cm Frame

40x60mm, taller than a 35x45mm ICAO photo.

Plain White Background

Evenly lit, no shadows behind your head.

Two Different Uploads

The portrait photo and the passport data page are separate files.

A Vietnam e-visa application asks for two images: this 4x6cm portrait photo, and a separate scan or photograph of your passport data page. They are not interchangeable, and uploading the passport page in the portrait slot is one of the most common application errors.

The portrait is the one that has to meet the photo rules — white background, no glasses, no hat, neutral expression. The passport page just has to be legible.

The 4x6cm Format

40mm wide by 60mm high — a taller frame than ICAO.

Vietnam uses a 4x6cm portrait, which is noticeably taller than the 35x45mm photo most countries use. Your head measures roughly 32-36mm chin to crown, which leaves more space above and below than you may be used to.

Note that 4x6cm is not the same as a 2x2 inch photo — 2x2 inches is 51x51mm and square. If a site tells you they are equivalent, it is wrong.

File Format & Size

JPG or JPEG, no larger than 2MB.

The portal accepts .jpg and .jpeg uploads with a 2MB ceiling. The file this tool produces sits comfortably under that.

Colour photos only — black and white images are rejected. Do not run the photo through a beauty filter or retouching app first; altered images are a documented rejection reason, and the photo needs to match the person who arrives at the border.

Expression & Accessories

Neutral face, no glasses, no head covering except religious.

Look straight at the camera with a neutral expression and your mouth closed. Both eyes must be open and clearly visible.

Glasses and hats must come off. Head coverings worn for religious reasons are accepted as long as your full face remains visible from the chin to the top of the forehead.
