Most authorities publish an exact size, a few publish a range, and Barbados publishes only an upper bound: the photographs should not be more than five centimetres by five centimetres.

That is a genuinely different instruction. Anything square and smaller is inside the rule, which is unusually forgiving — but it also means the department is not going to tell you what it actually wants, and a photographer used to a national standard elsewhere will simply give you theirs.

The department does not publish a head height either. This page therefore shows the 5x5cm square as a working frame and does not present a face measurement as a Barbadian figure, because there isn't one.

The Immigration Department states that the photographs should be taken by a professional photographer. That is not a phrase about quality — it is about who produces the print.

Several countries have moved this way from different directions. Germany, Sweden and Mexico refuse applicant-made photos outright and photograph you at the counter. Barbados keeps the photo in your hands but expects a studio to have made it.

Practically, if you are applying from Barbados or through a mission abroad, budget for a studio visit rather than assuming a printed file will do. The tool on this page is still useful for checking framing before you go.

Two photographs accompany the application, and the form together with one of the photographs must be certified by a person authorised to act as a guarantor.

This is the Commonwealth countersignature pattern, and it turns up across the region in slightly different shapes. Jamaica names the acceptable certifiers explicitly — Consular Officer, Justice of the Peace, Notary Public, Commissioner of Oaths, Medical Doctor or Lawyer — and adds that the certification itself expires after six months.

Ireland uses the reverse of the photo for a related purpose, asking you to sign it and write your application transaction number there.

The common thread is that a passport photo in these systems is not just an image. It is an image somebody has vouched for.

Barbadian citizens may apply from the Immigration Department in Barbados or through a mission abroad. Originals and photocopies of documents must both be submitted.

Because the published photo guidance is short, it is worth confirming details with the office handling your application — particularly if you are applying overseas, where the guarantor requirement can be harder to satisfy.
