The Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists what a visa request must contain, and the second item reads: filling in a visa application form with two photographs. That settles the count.

It does not settle the size, because no dimension appears anywhere on the page. This site shows the 35x45mm frame because that is the figure Iraq publishes for its own passport photograph — a reasonable default from the same authority, but not something Iraq has said about visas.

We would rather tell you that than print a number and let you assume it was checked. If the mission handling your application publishes its own figure, use theirs.

The Form Is in Arabic

And the address field is where applications stall.

The ministry requires all fields of the visa application form to be completed in Arabic, and singles out two: the applicant's address in Iraq — given as block, alley, house and a well-known landmark — and a telephone number, which it says speeds up the answer.

It also notes that many missions still forward forms with a great many fields left empty, the Iraqi address in particular. That is an unusual thing for a ministry to write down, and it tells you exactly where applications get stuck.

Because legibility varies between people, the ministry asks for the form fields and the visa sticker fields to be filled by electronic printing rather than by hand.

Eight Visa Types

Iraq publishes eight categories. A tourist visa allows one entry within three months of grant and a one-month stay for visiting tourist and heritage sites. A visit visa allows one entry within one month and a one-month stay, including for religious events or visits to the holy sites.

A normal visa permits one entry within three months and a stay of up to three months, and obliges the holder to attend the Directorate of Residence within ten days of arriving.

There are also political, service, transit (up to seven days), non-stop transit, and multi-entry visas for three, six or twelve months. An urgent visa can be granted by a residency officer at a border crossing to someone who arrives without one, if the officer is satisfied with the reasons.

Which category you are in changes how long you can stay far more than it changes what your photograph looks like.

The Rest of the Request

The published conditions are: a passport with at least six months of validity, the completed form with two photographs, the ability to cover living costs during the stay for ordinary passport holders, and a convincing reason for the visit appropriate to the visa type.

The visa is signed by the consul and stamped with the seal of the consulate, and fees are collected against an accounting receipt.
