You May Not Need a Visa

Since a 2014 government decision, holders of a valid Schengen, UK, EU member state or United States visa — and holders of a residence permit in the Schengen area, the EU or the US — may enter, transit and stay in Serbia for up to 90 days in a six-month period without applying for a visa first.

That covers a very large share of the people who would otherwise be reading a Serbian visa photo page. It is worth checking before you spend anything.

Serbia also accepts the two-passport case: an expired national passport carrying the valid visa or residence permit, presented alongside a valid national passport. Holders of a residence permit issued as a separate card, rather than a sticker in the passport, must present their valid passport at the border.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists the photo simply as 3.5x4.5cm — the standard 35x45mm frame used across Europe and much of Asia, so a spare Schengen photo is the right shape.

The passport requirements are stricter than the photo ones and catch more people. It must be valid at least 90 days after your intended departure from Serbia, contain at least two consecutive blank pages, and have been issued within the past 10 years.

Also required: a completed application form and adequate valid travel medical insurance. Missions can request more, and incomplete applications are not accepted.

Where It Goes

Applications go either in person to a Serbian embassy or consulate general, or online through welcometoserbia.gov.rs — and the online route requires a registered account on Serbia's electronic identification portal, eid.gov.rs.

Serbia also issues a Digital Travel Authorisation to nationals of countries for which the service is enabled. It is issued electronically and carries QR codes for validity and border checks, plus an electronic seal from the foreign ministry.

If the conditions for the digital authorisation are not met, a sticker visa is issued in the travel document instead — so which document you end up with is decided by the ministry, not by you.
