Make Belize Passport Photo

2 x 2 inches on white, with your head between 1.25 and 1.41 inches — a taller minimum than the US uses on the same frame. Both ears must show, and Belize spells out the trap: no white shirt on a white background.

    Sides and top, including hair.

Compliance Checklist

  • Don't wear white against white

Belize names this: there must be contrast between the image and the background.

  • Both ears showing

Face directly at the camera, no turn or tilt.

  • No glasses of any kind

No tinted shades or sunglasses either.

  • Minimal facial jewellery

Nothing that reflects light or distracts, unless religious, cultural or medical.

  • A true image, unaltered

In focus, no red eye, no reflected light on the face.

Background

white — and Belize adds the rule most countries leave implied: there must be contrast between the image and the background, giving the example of no white shirt on a white background

Belize Passport Photo Requirements, Explained

The same 2x2 inch frame as the US, a taller head, and the one contrast rule most countries leave you to work out.

Quick Check: Do's & Don'ts

No White Shirt on White

Belize names this exact mistake.

No Glasses At All

Including tinted shades and sunglasses.

2 x 2 Inches

Head between 1.25 and 1.41 inches.

Show Both Ears

Facing the camera squarely.

The Contrast Rule, Spelled Out

No white shirt on a white background.

Belize requires a white background and then adds something almost nobody else writes down: there must be contrast between the image and the background, with the example given as no white shirt on a white background.

That single clause resolves a contradiction people hit constantly. Countries demand a white background and neutral clothing, and a light shirt against a white wall leaves the shoulders dissolving into the backdrop — which is exactly what a face-detection system cannot segment.

Jamaica solves the same problem from the other end by varying the background colour to suit the applicant. Belize keeps the background fixed and tells you to change your shirt. Both are aiming at the same outcome.

Lighting must be uniform with no shadows or reflections on the face or in the background.

Same Frame as the US, Different Head

1.25 to 1.41 inches, not 1 to 1 3/8.

The photo is 2 x 2 inches — the square format used by the United States and a handful of others. That familiarity is a trap, because the head measurement is not the same.

Belize sets the head between 1.25 inches and 1.41 inches, which it states as 70% to 80% of the photo. The US band is 1 inch to 1 3/8, so its floor sits a quarter of an inch lower.

A photo correctly made for a US passport can therefore have a head too small for Belize while being exactly the right shape and size. It is worth re-cropping rather than reusing.

The head must be centred with a clear gap around the sides and top, hair included, and only one photo is required — not the two several Caribbean neighbours ask for.

Both Ears Showing

A framing test disguised as a detail.

The face shall look directly at the camera with both ears showing. It sounds like a small thing, but it is a precise way of saying the head is not turned even slightly.

Hair covering the ears is the usual reason this fails, so tuck it back if it falls forward. The requirement sits alongside the instruction that the photo shows a close-up of the head and top of the shoulders.

Head coverings are not permitted except for religious, cultural or medical justification — note that Belize includes cultural grounds, which many countries omit.

Jewellery, Glasses and Colour

Reflections are the theme.

Glasses are out entirely — no prescription glasses, no tinted shades, no sunglasses. Facial jewellery should be minimal so it does not reflect light or prove a distraction, again with an exception for religious, cultural or medical reasons.

The photo must be in focus with no red eye and no reflected light on the face, with adequate brightness and contrast and high-quality colour showing natural skin tones. Black and white photos are not acceptable.

It must be a true image, not altered in any way, and printed on high quality paper at high resolution. The photo must be less than 6 months old.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.What size is a Belize passport photo?
2 inches by 2 inches, with the head between 1.25 and 1.41 inches — stated as 70% to 80% of the photo. Only one photo is required.
Q.Can I reuse a US passport photo?
The frame matches, but the head band does not. The US allows 1 inch to 1 3/8, while Belize starts at 1.25 inches, so a US photo can be correctly sized and still have a head too small for Belize. Re-crop rather than reuse.
Q.What should I wear?
Not white. Belize requires contrast between the image and the background and gives the example directly: no white shirt on a white background. Keep facial jewellery minimal so it does not reflect light.
Q.Can I wear glasses?
No. Glasses, tinted shades and sunglasses are all excluded, with no prescription exception stated.
Q.Why do both ears have to show?
It is a precise way of requiring that your head is not turned. Face the camera squarely and tuck hair back if it falls over the ears.
Q.Can the photo be black and white?
No. It must be high quality colour showing natural skin tones, in focus, with no red eye and no reflected light on the face.
