UK Visa Photo

A UK visa application has no photo upload. You complete the application online, pay, and book an appointment at a visa application centre, where your fingerprints and a facial image are captured on the spot as part of proving your identity.

The centres are run by commercial partners under contract — Gerry's in Pakistan, VFS Global and TLScontact elsewhere. Whichever operator you deal with, the photograph is theirs to take, not yours to bring.

This page used to describe a 35x45mm photo with a light grey background, because it shared its guidance with the UK passport route. That was wrong for anyone applying for a visa, and it has been separated out.

The UK issues two different travel permissions and they treat photographs in opposite ways. If your nationality needs a visa, you supply no photo. If your nationality is visa-exempt, you need an Electronic Travel Authorisation instead — and there you upload the image yourself.

Pakistan, Vietnam, Ukraine, India and Iraq are visa nationalities. Brazil, Argentina and Singapore are ETA nationalities. Nothing about the destination changes; only your passport does.

Getting this backwards costs you either way. A visa applicant who buys prints has wasted the money; an ETA applicant who assumes the centre will photograph them turns up at the airport without an authorisation.

The ETA rule is also stricter than people expect: the image must be new and live, and GOV.UK states it must not be from a previously taken digital facial image — so the photo already in your passport does not qualify.

If you are a British citizen applying for or renewing a passport, you do supply the photograph, and the familiar rules apply — 35x45mm for a print, a plain light grey or cream background rather than white, and a recent image.

So the UK has three answers depending on the document: passport, you supply it; visa, the centre captures it; ETA, you supply it but it must be freshly taken. One country, three rules.

The practical value of knowing this is small but real: the price of a set of passport photos, plus the trip to get them, plus the time spent trying to match a specification that was never going to be checked.

What is worth preparing instead is the appointment itself. Take your passport, arrive on time, and expect fingerprints as well as a photograph.

If the centre's own booking page lists additional documents for your visa category, that list is the one to follow — it varies by route far more than the biometrics step does.
