Compliance Checklist

  • 43x55mm, not 35x45mm

35x45mm is the passport and Emirates ID size, which the ICP does publish.

  • White background is the stated rule

The ICP describes the visa photo only as a coloured personal photo with a white background — it publishes no dimensions for it.

  • Pure white background

Beige, cream or light grey walls get flagged.

  • No glasses

Remove them entirely — reflections cause rejections.

  • Taken within the last 6 months

The photo must match your current appearance.

UAE Visa Photo Requirements, Explained

43x55mm on a pure white background — a different size from the Emirates ID photo, which is where most rejections start.

Quick Check: Do's & Don'ts

Don't Use 35x45mm

That is the Emirates ID size. The visa photo is 43x55mm.

No Off-White Walls

The background must read as pure white, not cream or beige.

Fill 70-80% of the Frame

Your face, chin to crown, should dominate the photo.

Neutral Expression

Mouth closed, eyes open, looking straight at the lens.

Where This Figure Comes From

White is the authority's word. 43x55mm is not.

Worth being straight about the evidence, because the UAE is a country where photo figures multiply. The ICP — the authority that issues the visa — lists the photo requirement as "a colored personal photo with a white background", and gives no dimensions at all.

For passports it does give one, and states it twice: a personal photo sized 3.5 x 4.5 cm with a white background. So the authority is capable of publishing a measurement; it simply has not published one for visas.

43 x 55mm is the figure in wide use for UAE visa applications and it is what this page produces. It is not traceable to the ICP. We have kept it rather than substituting a different unsourced number, but you should know which parts of this page rest on the authority and which rest on convention — the white background and the ICAO framing are the authority's, the millimetres are not.

If the post or typing centre handling your application publishes its own figure, use theirs.

Getting the Size Right

43x55mm for the visa; 35x45mm is a different document.

The UAE visa photo measures 43mm wide by 55mm high. This is genuinely unusual — most countries settled on the 35x45mm ICAO layout — and it is the single most common reason a UAE application photo comes back rejected.

The Emirates ID, which you apply for after arriving, uses 35x45mm instead. Do not assume one photo covers both. If you already have ID photos printed, check the measurements before submitting them with a visa application.

The White Background Rule

Pure white, not off-white, and evenly lit.

UAE visa processing checks for a plain white background, and light grey, cream or beige walls are frequently flagged. A white wall that photographs slightly warm under indoor lighting is enough to cause problems.

Shadows behind your head count as background defects too. Even, diffuse lighting — daylight from a window facing you, not behind you — keeps the wall clean and your face evenly lit.

Digital Uploads

Most applications are submitted online through a typing centre or sponsor.

UAE visas are usually filed online by a sponsor, employer or typing centre rather than by the applicant in person, so what you hand over is a digital file. Keep the file this tool produces at full quality — repeated re-saving and re-compressing degrades it visibly.

Different portals publish slightly different pixel and file-size limits. If your sponsor or typing centre gives you a specific figure, follow theirs — they are the one submitting the form.

Glasses, Head Coverings & Expression

Glasses off; religious head coverings are fine.

Remove glasses. Reflections and frame shadows across the eyes are a standard rejection trigger, and there is no upside to leaving them on.

Head coverings worn for religious reasons are accepted, provided the full face from the chin to the top of the forehead stays visible and the covering casts no shadow across your features. Keep a neutral expression with your mouth closed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.Is the UAE visa photo 43x55mm or 35x45mm?
The visa photo is 43x55mm. The 35x45mm size belongs to the Emirates ID, which you apply for after you arrive — the two are not interchangeable.
Q.Can I use a light grey background?
No. UAE visa photos are checked against a plain white background, and off-white, cream or grey walls are routinely rejected.
Q.Can I wear glasses?
Remove them. Reflections and frame shadows across the eyes are one of the most common rejection reasons.
Q.Do I need a printed photo?
Usually not. Most UAE visa applications are filed online by a sponsor or typing centre, so a digital file is what you hand over.
Q.Are head coverings allowed?
Yes, when worn for religious reasons, as long as your full face from chin to forehead stays visible and unshadowed.
