Turkish Passport Photo Requirements, Explained

The 50x60mm biometric format, whether you apply in Türkiye or at a consulate abroad.

Quick Check: Do's & Don'ts

Don't Use an EU-Size Photo

35x45mm is the wrong shape for a Turkish passport.

No Glasses

Nothing that obscures your eyes or face.

Plain White Background

Evenly lit, with no shadow behind your head.

Wear a Darker Top

Keeps your shoulders distinct from the background.

Applying in Türkiye or Abroad

The same 50x60mm photo works at both.

Turkish passport applications are made at Nüfus ve Vatandaşlık İşleri offices in Türkiye, or at a Turkish consulate if you live abroad. The photo specification is the same 50x60mm biometric format in both cases.

If you live in a country that uses the 35x45mm ICAO photo, do not reuse a local passport photo. Turkish consulates commonly reject them for being the wrong size — this is a frequent problem for the diaspora in Germany, the Netherlands and elsewhere in Europe.

Head Size & Placement

A ~34mm head with roughly 10mm above the hair.

Within the 60mm height, the head measures about 34mm from chin to crown, leaving around 10mm between the top edge and the top of your hair.

That proportion is what makes a Turkish photo look different from an ICAO one: there is more space around the head. Cropping so your head fills the frame will make the face too large for the format.

Background & Lighting

Plain white, evenly lit, no shadows.

Stand about a metre away from a plain white wall so your body does not cast a shadow onto it. Face a window or another soft, even light source.

Avoid white or very light clothing. Against a white wall it removes the visual boundary between your shoulders and the background, which makes the photo harder to verify.

Expression & Accessories

Neutral expression, no glasses, head coverings allowed for religious reasons.

Look straight at the camera with a neutral expression — mouth closed, both eyes open and clearly visible, head not tilted.

Glasses must be removed. Head coverings are permitted for religious and medical reasons provided the full face stays visible from the chin to the top of the forehead.
