Thailand Visa Photo Requirements, Explained

35x45mm in colour, on a plain background — and the same photo rules apply to visa extensions inside Thailand.

Quick Check: Do's & Don'ts

No Black & White

Thai visa photos must be in colour.

No Uniforms

Avoid uniforms, camouflage and busy patterns.

Plain Background

Uniform, no shadows, no one else in frame.

Face About 70% of Frame

Centered, looking straight at the camera.

The Thai e-Visa Portal

Most applications are now filed online as a digital upload.

Thailand moved visa applications onto an official e-Visa portal, so for most applicants the photo is a file you upload rather than a print you hand over at an embassy counter.

Save the image this tool produces and upload it directly. Avoid photographing a printed photo with your phone — the reflections and colour shifts that introduces are a common cause of rejection.

Colour, Clothing & Background

Colour photo, everyday clothes, plain background.

The photo must be in colour. Black and white photos are not accepted for either a new visa or an extension of stay.

Wear simple, everyday clothing. Thai guidance specifically rules out uniforms, camouflage and strong patterns. The background needs to be plain and uniform, with no shadows, no patterns and nobody else visible in the frame.

Extensions of Stay

The same photo rules apply at Immigration inside Thailand.

If you extend your stay at a Thai Immigration office, you will need photos again, and the same specification applies — 35x45mm, colour, plain background, recent.

It is worth keeping the digital file rather than only the prints. Extensions come around faster than most people expect, and reprinting from the original file is quicker than starting over.

Expression & Head Position

Neutral face, centered, eyes open.

Your face should be centered and looking straight at the camera, filling roughly 70% of the frame. Keep a neutral expression with your mouth closed and both eyes open.

The photo must have been taken within the last six months and should be sharp, well-lit and high-resolution — soft or dim photos are frequently sent back.

Q.Can I use a black and white photo?
No. Thai visa photos must be in colour, for both new applications and extensions of stay.
