Thai Passport Photo Requirements, Explained

35x45mm on a plain background — and an honest answer about when you actually need to bring one.

Quick Check: Do's & Don'ts

No Black & White

Thai photo rules require colour.

No Uniforms

Everyday clothing, no camouflage or patterns.

Plain Background

Uniform, evenly lit, no shadows.

Neutral Expression

Mouth closed, eyes open, head upright.

When You Need Your Own Photo

Offices in Thailand photograph you; embassies abroad often ask you to bring one.

If you apply at a Department of Consular Affairs office inside Thailand, your photo and biometrics are captured on site as part of the appointment. You generally do not bring a photo at all.

Applying at a Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate abroad is where your own photo becomes useful, along with the supporting forms and copies some applications need. Check what your specific mission asks for before you travel to the appointment.

Size & Framing

35x45mm with a 32-36mm head, centred in the frame.

Thailand uses the standard 35x45mm format, the same size as the Thai visa photo. Your head should measure roughly 32-36mm from the chin to the crown.

Leave a small gap between the top of your hair and the top edge of the photo, and keep your face centred with your shoulders square to the camera.

Colour & Clothing

Colour photo, everyday clothes, plain background.

The photo must be in colour — black and white is not accepted. Wear simple, everyday clothing; uniforms, camouflage and strong patterns are ruled out.

The background needs to be plain and uniform with no shadows, patterns or other people in frame. A plain wall in even, diffuse light is all you need.

Expression & Recency

Neutral face, taken within six months.

Look straight at the camera with a neutral expression, mouth closed and both eyes open and clearly visible.

The photo should have been taken within the last six months and reflect your current appearance. Sharp, well-lit photos pass; soft or dim ones are frequently sent back.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.Do I need to bring a photo for a Thai passport?
Usually not inside Thailand — Consular Affairs offices capture your photo and biometrics on site. Your own photo matters most when applying at an embassy or consulate abroad.
Q.What size is a Thai passport photo?
35x45mm (3.5x4.5cm), the same size as the Thai visa photo, with the head at 32-36mm from chin to crown.
Q.Can I wear a uniform?
No. Thai photo guidance rules out uniforms, camouflage and strong patterns. Wear simple everyday clothing.
Q.Can the photo be black and white?
No. Colour photos only.
Q.Is this the same photo as a Thai visa photo?
The size is the same. The visa page covers the rules for foreign applicants; this page is for Thai passport applications.
