Taiwan Passport Photo Requirements, Explained

MOFA's 35x45mm spec: white background, 3.2-3.6cm head, bareheaded front view with the ears visible.

Quick Check: Do's & Don'ts

No Hats

Bareheaded, except for religious head coverings.

No Tinted Glasses

Coloured lenses are not accepted.

White Background

MOFA specifies white for passport photos.

Show Your Ears

Tuck hair back before the photo is taken.

MOFA's Measurements

35x45mm with the head at 3.2-3.6cm.

Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs specifies a photo of 直4.5公分 × 橫3.5公分 — 45mm high by 35mm wide — with the head measuring 3.2cm to 3.6cm from the chin to the top of the head.

That matches the standard ICAO geometry, so the crop is the same shape as a European passport photo. What differs is the strictness around the background and the ears.

White Background

MOFA asks for white specifically for passports.

For passport applications MOFA specifies a plain white background. Some third-party guides list light grey, which comes from Taiwanese visa guidance rather than the passport rules — for a passport, use white.

Stand about a metre from the wall with even frontal lighting so no shadow falls behind your head.

Bareheaded, Ears Visible

A front view with nothing obscuring the face or ears.

The photo must be taken bareheaded and front-facing, with the ears visible. Long hair should be tucked behind the ears.

Head coverings worn for religious reasons are the exception, and even then the face must be fully visible from the chin to the top of the forehead.

Prints & Recency

Two identical photos, taken within six months.

Passport applications normally require two identical recent colour photos. Print the same file twice so the pair genuinely matches.

The photo must have been taken within the last six months. Photos that no longer resemble the applicant are refused at the counter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.What size is a Taiwan passport photo?
35x45mm — MOFA writes it as 直4.5公分 × 橫3.5公分 — with the head measuring 3.2-3.6cm from chin to crown.
Q.White or light grey background?
White. MOFA specifies white for passport photos; the light grey you see in some guides comes from Taiwanese visa guidance instead.
Q.Do my ears need to be visible?
Yes. The photo must be bareheaded and front-facing with the ears shown, so tuck long hair back.
Q.How many photos do I need?
Two identical recent colour photos. Print the same file twice so the pair genuinely matches.
Q.Can I wear glasses?
Tinted or coloured lenses are not accepted. Clear glasses are safer removed to avoid reflections.
