What the ETA Actually Asks For

1. Passport Details

Name, date of birth, nationality, passport number and its issue and expiry dates.

Enter them exactly as printed — a mismatch means paying again on arrival.

2. Travel & Contact

Arrival date, port of departure, purpose of visit, and an address in Sri Lanka.

Tourist, business and transit are separate application types.

3. Submit on eta.gov.lk

Free for nationals of 40 countries, plus Seychelles, Singapore and Maldives.

No file upload appears at any step.

Q.What size photo does a Sri Lanka ETA need?▼
None. The ETA application does not collect a photograph at any stage. The online form on eta.gov.lk has 74 input fields and not one of them accepts a file, and the printed form the Department publishes has no photo box across its four pages.
Q.Then why do so many sites list a size for it?▼
Because a 35x45mm figure gets repeated between visa-service sites without anyone opening the application. The Department's own guidance for the ETA does not mention a photograph at all.
Q.Is there anything in Sri Lanka that does need one?▼
Yes — extending your stay. The Department asks for the application together with the photograph of the applicant, and if the online extension does not go through, tells you to come to the head office in Battaramulla with your passport and a photograph.
Q.What size should the extension photo be?▼
The Department does not publish one. The ordinary 35x45mm international passport-photo frame is a sensible default and what a studio will hand you, but it is not a Sri Lankan specification and we are not going to present it as one.
Q.Is the ETA free?▼
It is free of charge for nationals of 40 countries, for Seychelles and Singapore nationals staying up to 30 days, and for Maldivian nationals up to 90. Fees paid before 25 May 2026 are not refundable. Apply on eta.gov.lk rather than through a site that adds its own fee.
Q.Does an approved ETA guarantee entry?▼
No. You can still be found inadmissible at the port of entry, and you may be asked to show a return ticket and evidence of sufficient funds.
