Make Spanish Passport Photo

Spain uses a 26x32mm photo for the passport and DNI — not the 35x45mm size the rest of the EU uses. A standard European photo is the wrong size here.

Spanish Passport Photo Requirements, Explained

26x32mm — Spain is the one big European country that did not adopt the 35x45mm photo.

Quick Check: Do's & Don'ts

Don't Use 35x45mm

That is the size for the rest of the EU, not Spain.

No Accessories

Nothing that hides your facial features.

Uniform White Background

Homogeneous lighting, nothing visible behind you.

Fill 70-80% of the Height

Chin to crown, centred in the frame.

Why Spain Is Different

26mm wide by 32mm high, set by the Ministerio del Interior.

The Spanish passport and DNI photo is 26mm wide by 32mm high, a specification set by the Dirección General de la Policía under the Ministerio del Interior. Almost every other EU country uses 35x45mm.

This matters if you live outside Spain. A photo booth in France, Germany or the Netherlands will produce a 35x45mm photo by default, and it is simply the wrong size for a Spanish document — tell the shop the dimensions, or crop it yourself.

Passport and DNI

The same photo size covers both documents.

The 26x32mm format applies to both the passport and the DNI, so one set of photos covers both if you are renewing them together.

Note that at many Spanish police stations the photo is captured on site during the appointment. Your own photo matters most when applying through a consulate abroad, or where the office asks you to bring one.

Background & Lighting

Uniform white with homogeneous lighting and no shadows.

Spanish guidance calls for a white uniform background without shadows, with homogeneous lighting and no visible elements behind the person.

Stand about a metre from a plain white wall and light your face evenly from the front. 'Homogeneous' is the operative word — patchy lighting across the background fails even when the wall itself is white.

Pose & Expression

Frontal, neutral, eyes open, no accessories.

The pose must be frontal with a neutral expression, head straight and eyes open. Accessories that hide facial features are not permitted.

The photo must be in colour and recent. Your head should occupy between 70% and 80% of the frame height.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.What size is a Spanish passport photo?
26mm wide by 32mm high. Spain is the notable European exception — almost every other EU country uses 35x45mm.
Q.Can I use a photo taken in another EU country?
Not without recropping. Booths elsewhere in Europe default to 35x45mm, which is the wrong size for a Spanish passport or DNI.
Q.Does the DNI use the same photo?
Yes. The 26x32mm format covers both the passport and the DNI, so one set works if you renew them together.
Q.Do I need to bring a photo?
Many Spanish police stations capture the photo on site during the appointment. Your own photo matters most at a consulate abroad or where the office asks you to bring one.
Q.What background is required?
A uniform white background with homogeneous lighting, no shadows and nothing visible behind you.
