Nepali Passport Photo Requirements, Explained

35x45mm with the head at 70-80% of the frame — and the photo you will reuse for Gulf work visas.

Quick Check: Do's & Don'ts

No Off-Sizes

Anything other than 35x45mm is rejected automatically.

No Patterned Background

Plain, light and shadow-free.

Head at 70-80%

Chin to crown, centred in the frame.

Include the Shoulders

A head-and-shoulders crop, not head only.

Size & Framing

35x45mm, head 70-80% of the height, shoulders included.

Nepal uses the standard 35x45mm photo. Your head should occupy 70-80% of the image height, with your face centred and visible from chin to crown and the top of your shoulders in frame.

Photos that do not match the exact dimensions are rejected automatically, so measure before printing rather than trusting a shop to have used the right template.

The Same Photo Travels

Gulf work-visa applications use closely related formats.

Many Nepali passport applicants are heading on to work in the Gulf, and it is tempting to assume one photo covers everything. It does not: Saudi Arabia wants a 200x200px square, the UAE 43x55mm, Qatar 3x4cm, and Oman and Bahrain 4x6cm.

Keep the original high-resolution file rather than only prints. Recropping from the original for each destination is far better than photographing a print again.

Background & Lighting

Plain light background, no shadows.

Use a plain background — white or very light grey — with no patterns, shadows or texture. Standing about a metre from the wall keeps your shadow off it.

Light your face from the front. Overhead lighting leaves shadows in the eye sockets that make the face harder to verify.

Files & Prints

JPEG under 5MB for uploads; 300 DPI minimum.

For online applications, submit a JPEG of no more than 5MB at a minimum of 300 DPI. Printed photos should be on good-quality glossy or matte photo paper.

Keep a neutral expression with your mouth closed and both eyes open. The photo must have been taken within the last six months.
