The Size Is Stated Three Times

3.5x4.5cm, described as mandatory.

Mongolia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs Consular Department lists the requirements for three categories of visa — tourist, other types such as business or student, and official or diplomatic. All three carry the same line: a 3.5×4.5cm photo, followed by the parenthetical "the size of the photo is mandatory".

That parenthetical is unusual. Most consular pages give a measurement and move on; repeating it three times and flagging it as mandatory is what an office does when it keeps receiving the wrong thing.

This page previously carried a 3x4cm figure with a 30mm head, which circulates widely online. We could not trace it to any Mongolian authority, and it is 5mm short in both directions against the Consular Department's own page, so it has been corrected.

Nothing Digital at the Embassy

Every document has to be a hard copy.

If you are applying at a Mongolian embassy or consulate, the guidance is explicit and in capitals: all documents are required to be hard copies or printed out, and the embassy will not accept soft copies.

That covers the photograph as well as everything else. Turning up with the file on your phone is not a fallback here.

Normal processing is three working days with a paid expedited option, but depending on what you submit it can run to five or ten. The Consular Department advises contacting the embassy about timing before you book travel.

Or Skip the Embassy Entirely

98 nationalities can apply online.

Mongolia issues e-visas to citizens of 98 countries in three categories: K2 for tourism, K4 for participants in sporting, cultural or arts events and for film and content production, and K6 for transit of up to ten days.

E-visa applicants do not submit their passport or original supporting documents to a mission in person, and the result arrives by email within 72 hours. Hold a digital or printed copy to show airline staff and border officials.

If your nationality is not on that list, the embassy route above is the one that applies, and so does the printed-documents rule.

Background & Expression

Plain, evenly lit, neutral.

Use a plain light background with even lighting and no shadow behind your head. Stand about a metre clear of the wall so your shoulders do not cast one.

Look straight into the camera with a neutral expression and your mouth closed. The photo should be recent — within the last six months — and reflect your current appearance.

Your passport must be valid for at least six months before your intended travel date, which is checked at application rather than at the border.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.What size photo does a Mongolian visa need?
3.5 x 4.5cm (35x45mm). Mongolia's Consular Department lists it for tourist, business and official visas alike, each time followed by the note that the size of the photo is mandatory.
Q.I have seen 3x4cm quoted for Mongolia. Which is right?
3.5x4.5cm. The 3x4cm figure circulates widely but does not appear on the Consular Department's page, which is the only Mongolian authority stating a size. This page used to carry the 3x4cm figure and has been corrected.
Q.Can I use a spare Schengen visa photo?
The frame matches at 35x45mm, so usually yes. Check that it was taken within the last six months and is on a plain, evenly lit background.
Q.Is the passport photo the same size?
Yes. The Mongolian passport photo is also 35x45mm, so the same crop covers both.
Q.Can I email documents to the embassy?
No. The guidance states in capitals that all documents must be hard copies or printed out, and that the embassy will not accept soft copies. That includes the photograph.
Q.Do I need to go to an embassy at all?
Not if your nationality is among the 98 eligible for the e-visa. Those applicants apply online in one of three categories — K2 tourist, K4 events and content production, K6 transit up to ten days — and receive the result by email within 72 hours without submitting a passport in person.
