Why 50mm, Not 45mm

Malaysia kept a taller format when most countries standardised on ICAO.

The Malaysian visa photo is 35mm wide by 50mm high. It is only five millimetres taller than the 35x45mm ICAO photo, which is exactly why it causes problems — the two look nearly identical side by side, and a wrong-size photo is not always caught until the application is already in.

Any deviation from 35x50mm means retaking the photo. If you have spare passport photos from another country, measure them before assuming they will do.

The Pure White Background

RGB 255,255,255, with no texture, pattern or shadow.

Malaysia's guidance specifies a pure white background. A white wall photographed under warm indoor light often comes out cream or light grey, which is enough to fail.

Keep about a metre between yourself and the wall so your body does not cast a shadow onto it, and light your face from the front rather than from overhead.

Clothing & Contrast

Avoid tops that match your skin tone or the background.

Wear something that contrasts with both the white background and your skin tone. A white or very pale top against a white wall makes your shoulders vanish and the outline of your head ambiguous.

Religious head coverings are permitted as long as your facial features remain fully visible from the chin to the top of the forehead.

Glasses & Expression

No glare, no smiling, both eyes open.

If you wear glasses, there must be no glare obscuring your eyes. The safest option is simply to take them off — no application has ever been rejected for the absence of glasses.

Keep a neutral expression with your mouth closed. The image should not be digitally enhanced: no colour adjustment, no smoothing, no filters.
