Inside Jordan, a passport photo is 35x45mm — the same frame used across the region and most of Europe. If you are applying through a Jordanian consulate in the United States, those posts commonly ask for the American-standard 2x2 inch (51x51mm) photo instead.

This is not a crop of the same picture. 35x45mm is a 7:9 frame and 2x2 inch is square, so a photo built for one cannot be trimmed into the other without changing how much of your head fills it. The head sizing differs too: the US-style photo wants the head between 25mm and 35mm within a 51mm square, which is proportionally smaller than Jordan's 33mm inside a 45mm frame.

The 33mm Head

Jordan's floor sits above the generic ICAO band.

Jordan asks for a head height of at least 33mm measured from the bottom of the chin to the top of the hair, with roughly 4mm of clearance between the top of your hair and the top edge of the photo.

Most ICAO-derived guidance opens its band at 32mm. That one-millimetre gap is enough that a photo built to the generic minimum can sit just under Jordan's requirement, so do not assume a photo that passed for a Schengen application will pass here.

With 4mm above the hair and a 45mm frame, the practical ceiling for the head is around 36mm. The guide on this page is drawn to keep you inside that window.

Headphones, Expression and Pose

Jordanian guidance states that headphones, wireless hands-free devices and similar items must not be present in the photograph. Check your ears before you take the photo — a single in-ear bud is easy to forget when you are shooting yourself.

Keep both eyes open and your mouth closed with a neutral expression, and face the camera squarely without tilting or turning your head.

Background & Lighting

Plain white, evenly lit, no shadows.

The background must be plain white with no shadows. The most reliable way to get this is to stand about a metre away from a white wall so that your shadow falls behind you rather than onto the wall itself.

Light both sides of your face evenly. Uneven light is what turns a white wall grey on one side, and a background that shades from white to grey across the frame is a common rejection even when the wall was genuinely white.
