Irish Passport Photo Requirements, Explained

35x45mm on a plain background — plus the one thing worth checking before you apply through Passport Online.

Quick Check: Do's & Don'ts

Don't Assume the Route

Passport Online's photo submission has changed over time.

No Shadows

Not on your face, not on the background.

35x45mm, 32-36mm Head

The standard European geometry.

Plain Light Background

Even, with no pattern or texture.

Passport Online and Photo Codes

How Ireland accepts photos has changed — verify before applying.

For several years Passport Online required a photo code obtained from a participating photographer rather than a photo you supplied yourself. The Department of Foreign Affairs has since broadened how photos can be submitted.

Because this has genuinely changed, check the current guidance on the DFA Passport Online pages before you start. If a photo code is required for your application type, no self-made photo will substitute for it — that is a process requirement, not a photo-quality one.

Size & Head Height

35x45mm with a 32-36mm head.

Ireland uses the standard 35x45mm photo shared across the EU, with the head measuring roughly 32-36mm from chin to crown.

Leave a small gap between the top of your hair and the top edge, and keep your face centred with your shoulders square to the camera.

Background & Lighting

Plain, light and even, with no shadows.

Use a plain light background with no pattern or texture. Stand about a metre from the wall so your body does not cast a shadow onto it.

Light your face evenly from the front. Irish daylight through a window works well; overhead ceiling light tends to leave shadows in the eye sockets.

Expression, Glasses & Head Coverings

Neutral face, glasses best removed.

Face the camera with a neutral expression, mouth closed and both eyes open and clearly visible.

Glasses are tolerated only when there is no glare and the frames do not obscure the eyes; taking them off avoids the issue. Head coverings are accepted for religious reasons provided the full face stays visible.
