Indonesia Visa Photo Requirements, Explained

A 4x6cm photo on a solid white background for the e-visa portal — and why the red background you may have read about does not apply to you.

Quick Check: Do's & Don'ts

Not a Red Background

Red is for Indonesian passports. Visas use white.

Don't Crop Too Tight

The head should fill 50-60% of the height, not 80%.

At Least 400x600px

The portal rejects anything smaller.

Borderless Image

No frames, borders or white edges around the photo.

White for Visas, Red for Passports

The background colour depends on which document you are applying for.

Indonesian passport photos famously use a red background, and that fact gets repeated so often that visa applicants assume it applies to them too. It does not. The e-visa and e-VoA portal asks for a solid white background.

If you are a foreign national applying to visit Indonesia, white is what you want. The red background only concerns Indonesian citizens applying for their own passport.

Head Size & Framing

Head and hair between 50% and 60% of the image height.

The official portal specifies that the distance from the top of your head, including hair, to the bottom of your chin should be between 50% and 60% of the image's total height, with your eyes sitting between 50% and 60% up from the bottom.

That is a looser crop than the 70-80% you see on ICAO-style photos. Photos that are cropped too close are rejected just as often as ones taken from too far away.

File Requirements

JPEG, JPG or PNG, minimum 400x600px, maximum 2MB.

Uploads must be in colour as a JPEG, JPG or PNG, at least 400x600 pixels, and no larger than 2MB. The 400x600 minimum matches the 2:3 proportions of the 4x6cm frame.

The image should be borderless — no decorative frame, no white margin, no visible edge from a scanned print. Upload the file directly rather than a photograph of a printed copy.

Expression & Head Coverings

Neutral face, recent photo, religious coverings permitted.

Keep a neutral expression with your mouth closed and both eyes open, looking straight at the camera. The photo must have been taken within the last six months.

Head coverings are permitted for verified religious or medical reasons, and even then the full face from chin to forehead must remain clearly visible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.Does the Indonesia visa photo need a red background?
No. Red backgrounds are for Indonesian passport photos. The e-visa portal asks foreign applicants for a solid white background.
Q.What size is an Indonesia visa photo?
4x6cm (40x60mm), uploaded at a minimum of 400x600 pixels and no more than 2MB.
Q.How much of the photo should my head fill?
Between 50% and 60% of the image height, measured from the top of your hair to the bottom of your chin. That is a looser crop than an ICAO photo.

It is better not to. The portal wants a borderless image, and scans usually carry a visible edge or white margin.
Q.Are head coverings allowed?
Yes, for verified religious or medical reasons, provided your full face from chin to forehead stays visible.
