Indonesian Passport Photo Requirements, Explained

4x6cm on a RED background — Indonesia is one of only a handful of countries in the world that require a coloured background.

Quick Check: Do's & Don'ts

Not a White Background

White is the Indonesian visa photo. Passports are red.

Don't Guess the Size

4x6cm exactly — automated checks are strict.

Fill 70-80% of the Height

Chin to crown, including hair.

Wear a Contrasting Top

Avoid red clothing against a red background.

Why the Background Is Red

Indonesia is one of very few countries requiring a coloured background.

Indonesian passport photos use a red background under Imigrasi guidance. Almost every other country in the world specifies white or light grey, which is why this catches people out — a perfectly good photo taken for any other document is the wrong colour here.

The corollary matters just as much: the Indonesian *visa* photo, which foreign nationals upload to the e-visa portal, uses a solid white background. Red is for the passport, white is for the visa. Getting these backwards is the single most common Indonesian ID-photo mistake.

What to Wear Against Red

Avoid red and dark-red clothing.

A red or maroon top against a red background removes the outline of your shoulders, exactly the way a white shirt disappears against a white wall. Choose a contrasting colour — white, light blue, grey or black all read cleanly.

Avoid busy patterns as well. The background is already a strong colour; a patterned top makes the photo harder to verify.

Size & Head Height

40x60mm with the head at 70-80% of the height.

The frame is 4x6cm — 40mm wide by 60mm high — and the head, measured from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head including hair, should fill 70-80% of that height, so roughly 42-48mm.

That is a tighter crop than the Indonesian visa photo, which asks for the head at only 50-60% of the height. The two documents genuinely differ in framing as well as in background colour.

Resolution & Recency

At least 300 DPI, taken within the last six months.

Photos should be at least 300 DPI for print quality. At 40x60mm that works out to roughly 472x709 pixels as a minimum.

The photo must have been taken within the last six months. Head coverings are permitted for verified religious or medical reasons, and even then the full face from chin to forehead must remain clearly visible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.Does an Indonesian passport photo really need a red background?
Yes. Indonesia is one of only a handful of countries worldwide that require a coloured background for passport photos.
Q.Is the visa photo also red?
No — the opposite. The Indonesian e-visa portal asks foreign applicants for a solid white background. Red is the passport, white is the visa.
Q.What should I wear?
Anything that contrasts with red. A red or maroon top against a red background erases the outline of your shoulders.
Q.What size is the photo?
4x6cm (40x60mm), with your head filling 70-80% of the height from chin to crown including hair.
Q.Do I need a special backdrop?
No. Stand against any plain wall — the background is replaced with the correct red automatically.
