If you are applying through a Ghanaian mission abroad, your own photo carries more weight, since there may be no on-site capture facility. Check with the mission handling your application.

Ghana uses the standard 35x45mm photo with the head measuring roughly 32-36mm from chin to crown — about 70-80% of the frame height.
Leave a small gap between the top of your hair and the top edge. Cropping tight to the hairline is a common and easily avoided rejection.

Use a plain white wall with no objects, patterns or other people in frame. Standing about a metre away keeps your shadow off the wall.
Light your face from the front rather than overhead. Overhead light drops shadows into the eye sockets and under the nose, which makes the face harder to verify.
Neutral face, no headgear except religious.
Keep a neutral expression with your mouth closed and both eyes open and clearly visible, looking straight at the camera.
Hats and caps must come off; head coverings worn for religious reasons are accepted as long as the full face stays visible. The photo must have been taken within the last six months.
