This Requirement Is New

ESTA collected no image for most of its life.

For years the honest answer to "what size is an ESTA photo" was that there wasn't one, because the application did not collect an image at all. Plenty of guidance still says exactly that, and it is now out of date.

CBP's official ESTA site lists what you need to apply, and the list reads: a valid passport from a Visa Waiver Program country, a traveler's selfie photo, a valid email address, a home address and phone number, an emergency contact, and a payment method.

So a photo is part of it now. If you last applied a few years ago and remember it as a purely text form, that has changed.

But There Is Still No Published Size

CBP names the photo without specifying it.

CBP calls it a selfie and stops there. No pixel minimum, no millimetres, no file-size ceiling, no background colour appears alongside it.

That absence is informative rather than frustrating. A specification exists when an authority intends to reject files for missing it; calling something a selfie signals the opposite — that the check is on whether your face is identifiable, not on whether the crop is 35mm wide.

We are not going to invent numbers to fill the gap. The frame this page offers is the square US format, which is a sensible default for a US-facing facial image, and it is a default rather than a requirement.

What does matter is the ordinary stuff: face the camera, keep the whole face visible, use even light and a plain background, and avoid sunglasses or anything that obscures your features.

ESTA Is Not a US Visa

And the visa does have a real specification.

ESTA is for citizens and eligible nationals of Visa Waiver Program countries travelling for business or pleasure for 90 days or less, who do not already hold a visitor's visa.

If your nationality is not in the programme — Brazil and India are not, for example — you need a US visa instead, and that application has a genuine, published photo specification: 2 x 2 inches square, white background.

So the same country produces two different answers depending on your passport. Singaporeans use ESTA; Brazilians and Indians use the visa. Check which one applies before you prepare anything.

The Fee, and the Sites That Inflate It

The application fee is $40.27, payable by MasterCard, Visa, American Express, Discover or PayPal. Applications go through esta.cbp.dhs.gov or the official ESTA mobile app.

Because ESTA is cheap and mandatory, a whole industry of lookalike sites exists to charge several times that as a "service fee" for filling in the same form. The government site is the one linked from CBP.

Apply well before you travel rather than at the airport, and remember that an approved ESTA authorises you to board, not to enter — admission is decided at the border.
