Egypt Passport Photo Requirements, Explained

40x60mm, same as the Egyptian visa photo — but the head height and the file rules are not the same, which is the whole problem.

Quick Check: Do's & Don'ts

Don't Reuse a Visa Crop

Same frame, different head height.

No PNG

.jpg only, and under 240KB.

40 x 60mm (4x6cm)

The Egyptian passport frame.

Head 38mm or More

With at least 6mm above the hair.

Not the Same as the Visa Photo

Identical frame, different rules inside it.

Egypt's passport and e-visa photos are both 40x60mm on a white background, which makes them look interchangeable. They are not.

The passport guidance gives a minimum head height of 38mm with at least 6mm of clearance above the head. The e-visa guidance is usually read as the face filling 70-80% of the frame, which lands at 42-48mm. A compliant 38mm passport head sits below the visa range — so a guide built for the visa photo would push you to crop tighter than the passport asks for. This page uses the passport figures.

.jpg Only, 240KB Maximum

The tightest constraint on the page.

The acceptable digital format is .jpg, and the file must come in at 240KB or less. That is a real limit rather than a suggestion, and it is tighter than the multi-megabyte ceilings most portals allow.

Get under it by lowering the JPEG quality, not by shrinking the pixel dimensions. Downscaling to hit the byte count leaves the face too small to verify, which fails a different check. Note also that modern iPhones shoot HEIC by default — export explicitly as JPEG.

Where the Numbers Stop

The minimum is published; the maximum is not.

Egyptian guidance publishes a minimum head height (38mm) and a minimum top clearance (6mm) but no maximum head size. This tool targets an upper bound of 46mm, which is the largest head that still leaves the required 6mm inside a 60mm frame.

That ceiling is inferred rather than official, and it is worth saying so plainly. If your head lands anywhere between 38mm and 46mm with 6mm clear above the hair, you are inside every published figure.

Glasses, Head Coverings, Background

Restrictive on eyewear, plain white behind.

Glasses are not permitted unless you have a documented medical reason. Hats and head coverings are generally not allowed either; if you wear one for religious reasons you may be asked to submit a signed statement confirming its religious significance.

The background must be plain white with no shadows. Stand about a metre clear of the wall, light your face evenly from the front, and make sure the photo was taken within the last six months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.What size is an Egyptian passport photo?
40x60mm (4x6cm) on a plain white background, with a minimum head height of 38mm and at least 6mm of clearance above the head.
Q.Is it the same as the Egypt e-visa photo?
The frame is the same 40x60mm, but the head height differs — the passport minimum is 38mm, while the visa photo is usually read as 42-48mm. Use the passport figures here.
Q.What format and file size?
.jpg only, at 240KB or less. Lower the JPEG quality to get under the limit rather than shrinking the pixel dimensions.
Q.Is there a maximum head height?
None is published. This tool caps at 46mm, the largest head that still leaves the required 6mm clear inside a 60mm frame — an inferred figure, not an official one.
Q.Can I wear glasses?
Only with a documented medical reason. Hats and head coverings are generally not allowed, and religious head coverings may need a signed statement.
