Make Denmark Passport Photo

A Danish passport is applied for in person at the Borgerservice — the citizen service centre — of your own municipality. There is no single national counter, which means the practical experience varies a little from one kommune to the next.

Most Borgerservice centres can take the biometric photo at the counter for a fee, so bringing prints is frequently unnecessary. Since the details differ locally, check your own municipality's page for the appointment you have booked rather than assuming.

A compliant 35x45mm photo still has uses: Danish citizens applying through an embassy abroad, applications that accept a submitted photograph, and the many other documents that take the same frame.

It can also be cheaper. Counter photography carries a fee, and if you already have a suitable image, preparing it yourself and asking whether it can be accepted is a reasonable question to put to your Borgerservice.

Denmark uses the 35x45mm ICAO 9303 photo shared by every EU member state. Your head should measure 32-36mm from chin to crown, about 70-80% of the frame height, centred, with a small gap above the hair.

The background should be white and evenly lit with no shadow behind your head. Stand roughly a metre clear of the wall to keep it clean.

Keep a neutral expression with your mouth closed. Smiling, frowning and exaggerated expressions all interfere with biometric matching.

Sunglasses and tinted lenses are not accepted; ordinary glasses are best removed, since frames crossing the eyes and lens reflections both cause rejections. Hats and head coverings are only permitted for religious reasons. The photo must be no more than six months old.
