Bahrain Passport Photo Requirements, Explained

40x60mm with a 38mm head — a noticeably taller frame than the 35x45mm most countries use. And Bahrain runs two different photo shapes depending on whether you print or upload.

Two Different Frames

A Taller Frame Than Usual

40x60mm, not 35x45mm.

A Bahraini passport photo is 40 x 60mm — 4 x 6cm. That is both wider and considerably taller than the 35x45mm frame used across Europe and much of Asia, and it is the same format Egypt, the UAE and several other countries in the region use.

The head sits at 38mm measured from the top of your hair to the bottom of your chin, with 6mm of clearance between the top of your hair and the top edge of the photo. That puts your chin line around 44mm down the frame, leaving the lower portion for your neck and shoulders.

Because the frame is taller, a 35x45mm photo cannot simply be reprinted at this size. The proportions differ, so the head would end up the wrong size relative to the frame even though the picture itself is fine.

Printed 40x60mm vs Online 32.5x43mm

The e-passport form uses its own shape.

Bahrain's Nationality, Passports and Residence Affairs (NPRA) announced separate image conditions for the electronic passport, specifying 32.5 x 43mm — around 933 x 1244 pixels — for the online submission.

That is a different aspect ratio, not a rescale. 40x60mm is a 2:3 frame; 32.5x43mm is roughly 3:4. Resizing one into the other either crops off part of your head or leaves the head undersized within the frame, so treat them as two separate photos.

This page builds the printed 40x60mm version. If you are completing the online e-passport form and it specifies 32.5x43mm, follow that figure — and don't assume the file you printed from will pass the upload validator.

Glare, Flash and Uniform Light

Bahrain lists these as distinct faults.

NPRA's conditions ask for uniform lighting with no shadows, no glare and no flash reflections. Listing glare and reflection separately from shadows is worth noticing: it means a well-exposed, shadow-free photo can still be refused for a bright hotspot on your forehead or a flash bounce off a glossy wall.

Direct on-camera flash is the usual cause. Use soft, even light from the front instead — daylight through a window, with a second light or a reflector on the other side to balance it.

The background must be pure white and the image must not be altered in any way.

Expression & Recency

Neutral, mouth closed, within six months.

Keep a neutral facial expression with your mouth closed. The guidance explicitly rules out smiling, frowning and any exaggerated expression, so a slight closed-mouth smile that would pass in some countries is not safe here.

The photo must have been taken within the last six months and must show your current appearance. Face the camera squarely with both eyes open.
