Argentine Passport Photo Requirements, Explained

A square 4x4cm photo — a shape almost no other country uses, and one a European photo booth will never produce.

Argentina's frame is square, not rectangular.

No Black & White

Colour photos only.

A square frame needs vertical centring too.

The Square Format

40mm by 40mm — an unusual shape internationally.

Argentina uses a square 4x4cm photo for the passport and DNI. Almost every other country uses a rectangle, so a photo taken abroad — in Spain, Italy or anywhere in the EU — will be the wrong shape.

Because the frame is square, centring matters in both directions. In a tall rectangular photo you mainly worry about head height; here you also need the head positioned correctly from top to bottom of a frame that is no taller than it is wide.

How Big Should the Head Be?

About 70-75% of the frame — published sources disagree, so here is the reasoning.

Published guidance for Argentina is inconsistent. Some sources repeat '32-36mm chin to crown', a figure carried over from the 35x45mm ICAO layout; others say the head should be roughly 70-75% of the picture.

On a 40mm-tall frame those cannot both be true — a 36mm head would leave 4mm of total margin, which is not a usable photo. This tool follows the 70-75% reading, which puts the head at roughly 28-30mm. If your consulate publishes a specific figure, follow theirs.

Applying From Abroad

Consulates serve the large Argentine community overseas.

Argentine citizens abroad renew through a consulate, and RENAPER enrolment appointments are held at consular offices in many countries.

This is exactly where the square format causes trouble: local photo shops in Europe and North America default to their own national sizes. Bring the correct 4x4cm crop rather than hoping a booth gets it right.

Expression & Head Coverings

Neutral face; religious and medical head coverings permitted.

Face the camera with a neutral expression, mouth closed and both eyes open and clearly visible.

Headgear worn for religious or cultural reasons is allowed provided it does not obscure or cover the face, and the same applies to head coverings worn for medical reasons.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.What size is an Argentine passport photo?
A square 4x4cm (40x40mm). Almost every other country uses a rectangle, so photos taken abroad are usually the wrong shape.
Q.How big should my head be in the frame?
Roughly 70-75% of the height, about 28-30mm. Some sources repeat a 32-36mm figure carried over from the 35x45mm layout, but on a 40mm frame that would leave almost no margin. Follow your consulate's figure if they publish one.
Q.Does the DNI use the same photo?
Yes, the same square 4x4cm format is used for the DNI as well as the passport.
Q.Can I use a photo taken in Europe?
Not without recropping. European booths produce 35x45mm rectangles, which is the wrong shape entirely.
Q.Are head coverings allowed?
Yes, for religious, cultural or medical reasons, provided they do not obscure or cover the face.
