ETIAS Delayed Again: EU Drops Its Q4 2026 Target, 2027 Now Likely

The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) — the pre-travel screening non-EU, non-visa-required travelers were expected to need for Schengen entry — no longer has an official launch window. In mid-July 2026, the EU quietly removed the "Q4 2026" target that had sat on ETIAS's own site for months.
The removal followed Financial Times reporting that eu-LISA — the EU agency actually building the system — had concluded internally that a 2026 launch was no longer realistic. Rather than defend a date it couldn't hit, the official ETIAS page dropped the target entirely. The EU says a revised timeline will follow eu-LISA's board meeting in September 2026; most reporting since the announcement treats a 2027 launch as the likely outcome, though nothing is confirmed.
The short version: if you were bracing for ETIAS to kick in later this year, it isn't going to. There's no application to file and no photo to prepare yet — there isn't a system to apply to.
This is not the first delay
ETIAS has slipped multiple times since it was first proposed, moving from an original mid-2020s target through several revised dates as the underlying IT systems (particularly the Entry/Exit System, or EES, that ETIAS depends on) took longer than planned to get working across all Schengen border points. The pattern this time is the same shape as before: an official date holds for a while, then gets quietly walked back once the technical reality catches up with the public timeline.
What this means if you're planning travel
Nothing changes for trips booked for the rest of 2026 — ETIAS was never going to be enforced before a real launch date arrives, and that date has now moved out, not up. If you're a passport holder from a visa-exempt country traveling to the Schengen area, you don't need to do anything differently right now. We'll update this page (and publish a new one) once the EU actually sets a confirmed date after the September 2026 board meeting.
When ETIAS does go live, the application will need a digital photo meeting its own spec — we already have an ETIAS photo tool built and ready (it currently follows the Schengen visa-photo standard ETIAS is expected to reuse), so there's nothing to prepare there either until a real date lands.
