Canada Passport Photo Requirements, Explained

IRCC's rules are stricter than most countries — especially about glasses and photo editing.

Quick Check: Do's & Don'ts

No Glasses, Ever

Canada does not allow glasses in passport photos, even with a medical exemption.

No Editing

No filters, retouching, or AI enhancement of any kind.

Plain White Background

No shadows, patterns, or marks of any kind.

Studio Info on the Back

Printed photos need the photographer's name, address, and date stamped or written on the back.

The No-Glasses Rule

Canada is one of the few countries with a total ban on glasses.

Unlike the US, UK, or EU, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) does not allow glasses in passport or PR card photos under any circumstances — even with a medical certificate. If you normally wear glasses, you'll need to remove them for this photo specifically.

This is one of the most common mistakes for applicants used to other countries' rules, so it's worth double-checking before you submit.

Printed Photo Requirements

Physical copies need specific information on the back.

If submitting printed photos, IRCC requires the photographer's name, complete studio address, and the date the photo was taken to be stamped or handwritten on the back of each copy.

Photos must be printed on high-quality photo paper at exactly 50 x 70mm — slight size deviations can cause rejection.

Digital Submission Rules

Online applications have their own pixel and file-size rules.

For IRCC's online portal, your digital photo must be a JPEG with a 2:3 portrait aspect ratio, between 1200x1800 and 3000x4500 pixels, and 200KB to 5MB in size.

The chin-to-crown head height should occupy 45-50% of the total image height — our tool handles this calculation automatically.

No Editing or Filters

IRCC explicitly rejects any digitally altered photos.

Your photo must not be altered in any way, including through photo-editing software, beauty filters, or AI tools. This includes smoothing skin, whitening teeth, or adjusting facial features — the photo must be a true, unedited likeness.
