Nigeria Passport Photo Requirements, Explained

Follow the Nigeria Immigration Service's (NIS) strict rules to avoid delays with your application.

Quick Check: Do's & Don'ts

No Off-White Backgrounds

The background must be pure white — off-white, cream, or light blue will be rejected.

No Glasses

Eyeglasses of any kind, including prescription glasses, are prohibited.

Very Recent Photo

Take your photo within 2 weeks of submitting your application.

Neutral, Direct Gaze

Mouth closed, both eyes open, looking directly at the camera.

The Strict 2-Week Rule

Nigeria's photo recency requirement is far tighter than most countries.

The most distinctive Nigerian rule is recency: your photo must have been taken within 2 weeks of your application date, compared to the 6-month window most other countries allow. Plan to take your photo shortly before you apply, not months in advance.

Pure White Background — Strictly Enforced

NIS rejects anything but pure white.

The NIS is strict about background color: it must be pure white. Off-white, cream, or light blue backgrounds — which pass in some other countries — will be rejected during biometric capture in Nigeria.

Attire & Accessories

No glasses, standard ICAO biometric rules.

The Nigeria Immigration Service prohibits eyeglasses, including prescription glasses, in line with ICAO biometric standards.

Head height should measure roughly 32-36mm from chin to crown, with a small margin (around 3mm) between the top of the hair and the top edge of the photo.

Facial Expression & Posing

Neutral expression, closed mouth, direct gaze.

A neutral expression with a closed mouth is required. Both eyes must be open and looking directly at the camera.
